(D2) Discuss how the post-production edits have complemented recorded cinematography effects to create meaning

In this report, I will explain what editing techniques we have used and how they have created meaning in the final version of our video. Final Edit -  When editing our music video, we made decisions that would compliment the cinematic footage that we recorded. This includes various small edits, and some more complex edit to achieved a dignified style that we set out to replicate. We also mimicked other music videos of the same genre. For example, the original Firestarter music video, the use of colour is completely limited and is black and white. We decided to replicate this

(P7) Apply post-production and editing techniques

Offline edit -  When creating the offline edit for our music video, we used Adobe Premiere Pro as this is a much easier software to use than After Effects to cut, paste and line up the footage to create a quick offline edit. When using Premiere, we used folders for the footage we gathered to make it easier to sort through, change or delete. This was a bonus to using Premiere Pro as if gave us helpful tools. Using Premiere pro, all we had to do was drag the video files (MP4) into the sequence and then cut the video clips to size. We would do this with each video clip until we have completed the offline edit. The video was in 1920x1080, which is industry standard for online videos such as YouTube and streaming platforms. This is Ultra Hight Definition video which means that quality would not be an issue when the video is rendered. The frame rate that we exported at was 25fps. This is also industry standard for the frame-rate of the video, as it provides a very smooth video without be...

(P6) Manipulate the camera settings to record cinematic quality footage

Image
When recording our footage, we manipulated and changed camera settings to create suitable footage to be used in our edit for the music video.  ISO and Aperture -  When we were on shoot days, we used the Canon R5 with a 55mm-105mm lens in manual mode to capture our footage. We adjusted aperture, ISO, focal length, zoom and shutter speed throughout the production to ensure that our footage reflected the ideal that we wanted to videos to look like. In some of our shots, we had to change the aperture or the ISO to level our brightness and make sure that any shots were not too bright or too dark.  Adjusting aperture was also important to establish a depth of field as many of our shots relied on having a portion, or full, character in frame with a blurred background in order to frame and isolate them in shot. This meant adjusting the aperture to a lower f. stop whilst decreasing ISO to limit how bright the frame gets. This is an example of how we used aperture to our advantage....

(P5) Apply cinematic lighting techniques for the scenes and locations

Image
When recording our footage, we used different lighting techniques in order to achieve the feel and style of video that we wanted. These lighting styles consisted of, natural lighting, camera manipulation and using physical lighting sources such as fire. Natural Lighting -  For most of the shots in our film, we used natural lighting that occurred on the shoot day. This is because it made our logistics much easier, but mostly because it suited the style of the music video much better. This lighting style was created by a midday overcast sky which we used for some of our shots in the video too. The overcast sky provided the perfect lighting for the video, as it was neutral lighting, rather than sunlight which would not have fit the style of the video. The monotone colour produced by the sky created a dark, serious style of video which fit the genre of the video and the song perfectly. Fire/Creative Lighting -  For some of our shots, we used fire to fit in with the theme of the 'f...

(D1) Discuss how the meaning was created through the use of the lighting and camera settings

Image
In this post, I will discuss and highlight how we have created meaning through lighting and camera settings. We made sure that thought the filming of our music video, we manufactured the camera settings to fit the genre of our video. When recording our footage, we used various camera techniques, settings and shot types to create meaning that we could use to successfully create a music video. For example, in terms of lighting, we needed to create a monotone, neutral lighting style to fit in with the style of the music video, which is a dark EDM rock style video.  This means that we decided to use the natural lighting of the sky on the day of shooting. We chose a day that had a grey toned overcast sky which was bright enough to film in, this provided a monotone lighting style that we could work with well and that was suitable to the style of the music and video.  This is how the lighting style ended up looking, with the overcast sky and the digital exposure manipulation, the sho...

(M2) Ensure that recorded footage reflects generic conventions

Image
For our music video, we made sure to follow the main codes and conventions for music videos of the EDM genre and more specifically The Prodigy's genre. Our video will use similar shots to The Prodigy's other music videos, which is a darker, fast paced style with expressionistic action. To ensure that we knew the conventions of our style of music videos, we used the original Firestarter music video by The Prodigy, as well as various other example of EDM music videos that we could find on YouTube. Location/Mise-en-scene -  In order to stick to the conventions of this style of music video, we decided that filming outside in a forest-type area was a good idea, as it was winter time when we recorded meaning that the sky was naturally darker. However, because of this we needed to ensure that the camera settings were correct to fit in with the lighting, this means adjusting the aperture and iso to allow the camera to capture more light whilst also not overexposing the footage. Lightin...

(M1) Explain the use of lighting and camera settings in the context of the plan you have created

In this report I will explain our choices of camera as a group and the settings we will use for this camera. I will also explain our use of lighting to create cinematic quality footage, and to create a distinct style that will suit the purpose of our film. Camera Choice for our Video: For our music video, we will be using a DSLR camera. We have chosen this type of camera as the quality, versatility and the ability to change lenses is very useful to gain very distinctive shot types. We are also using a DSLR as it is very high professional grade camera quality which will create stable video for our video. DSLR cameras are also small, interchangeable and fairly simple to use. The cameras can record in HDR and UHD which is from 1440p (2560x1440) to 4K cinema quality (3840x2160). As long as we keep the footage uncompressed we will hopefully achieve full 4K quality and be able to export the video at this resolution level. The footage will also be filmed in 16:9 as this is standard for screen...
